Grading Modes

Amber offers two ways to evaluate your answers during review.

AI Grading

The default mode. When you submit an answer, an LLM receives the card’s front, back, and your response. It returns:

  • Accuracy score (0-100%) — how well your answer matches the expected knowledge
  • Feedback — specific notes on what you got right, what you missed, and any corrections

The score is informational only. After seeing it, you select your own FSRS rating (Again / Hard / Good / Easy) based on how confident you feel.

Self Grading

Toggle this mode if you prefer traditional flashcard review. The flow becomes:

  1. See the question
  2. Think of your answer (mentally or typed)
  3. Reveal the card’s back
  4. Rate yourself directly

No LLM call is made. This is faster and works offline.

When to use which

  • AI Grading is best for complex topics where you want objective feedback on your understanding
  • Self Grading is best for quick reviews, simple facts, or when you want to move fast

You can switch between modes at any time — even mid-session.
